چکیده

It is a great honour to contribute to this Festschrift for Tim Miles. It is a great pleasure also in that Tim’s enthusiasm, guidance and openmindedness have been an inspiration to us in our research. In this chapter we present the results of a recently-completed study which we believe is the most wide-ranging analysis of the skills of dyslexic children yet performed. Whilst confirming the phonological deficits which Tim and others were instrumental in discovering, we also found equal, and sometimes greater, deficits in other areas of skill. We believe that these results are of significance for the whole dyslexia community, emphasising the dangers of focusing on any single facet of dyslexia, and pointing the way towards a deeper understanding of the pattern of difficulties. We conclude with three ‘buzzes’, each a speculative account of a possible cause of dyslexia, at the cognitive level, the connectionist level and the neural level. It is unlikely that these ‘buzzes’ are completely correct, and they may indeed be completely wrong, but we offer them in the hope that they may inspire further workers to pursue research in this area.

Dyslexia is more than a phonological disability

This article reports an extended ‘case series’ of studies comparing performance of three age groups of dyslexic and matched control children on primitive skills. The dyslexic children showed deficits in most of the skills, with fundamental deficits (worse performance than reading age controls) on phonological skill, naming speed, bead threading, and on some balance tasks. Furthermore, there was...

Spelling Remediation for Dyslexic Children: a Skills Approach

The main applied theme of this chapter is an exposition of the 'SelfSpell' computer-based environment for children learning to spell. In long-term research on the causes of dyslexia we had built up a panel of dyslexic children, and we developed SelfSpell mainly as a 'thankyou' to them for their unstinting support of our experimental programme over a period of years. Although SelfSpell was initi...

PCSK6 is associated with handedness in individuals with dyslexia

Approximately 90% of humans are right-handed. Handedness is a heritable trait, yet the genetic basis is not well understood. Here we report a genome-wide association study for a quantitative measure of relative hand skill in individuals with dyslexia [reading disability (RD)]. The most highly associated marker, rs11855415 (P = 4.7 × 10(-7)), is located within PCSK6. Two independent cohorts with...

parents, and the support of the teachers and pupils at Ecclesall Junior School and Silverdale Secondary School, Sheffield. Persistent Deficits in Motor Skill for Children with Dyslexia

Three groups of children with dyslexia, mean age 8, 13 and 17 years, and three groups of normally achieving children matched for age and IQ with the dyslexic groups undertook three tests of motor skill. For peg placing and articulation rate, the children with dyslexia were significantly slower than their chronological age controls, and equivalent to their reading age controls. For bead threadin...

The first candidate gene for dyslexia: Turning the page of a new chapter of research.

T he subfield of research on both typical and atypical reading development is one of the most saturated with ideas, researchers, and financial support with respect to the fields of human development and education. The article by Taipale et al. (1) in this issue of PNAS is an outcome of a truly multidisciplinary field, attended by researchers from different areas. There are multiple reasons for ...
